Although Fagen used the reference to Alabama's Crimson Tide in the lyrics to illustrate a winner, the song does not refer to college football. The narrator is actually explaining his accidental, albeit predictable death, he feels comfortable with. The expanding man refers to life after death, (the fine line he is ready to cross). The shape/shade is his dead body, now a spirit. The stand he approaches is Judgement. In life he was a loser- in death he feels success at something.Call me Deacon Blue

I remember a story Dan and Walter told about Pete's solo. They had heard him play on "The Tonight Show", and thought he had a distinctive sound. When they requested him, NBC (or whoever) sent over a different sax player. They sent him back and finally got Pete.

I would be remiss if I failed to include the following geniuses to my list: jazz musicians--Oscar Peterson, Thelonios Monk, Nat Cole, Stephan Grapelli; jazz singers: Sarah Vaughan, Johnny Mathis; classical musician--Vladimir Horowitz My list is by no means inclusive. But I think you get my drift. Steely Dan belongs on that list.

I am moved by the the geniuses of various genres of music: 1st half of the 20th Century--Hoagy Carmichael, musician/singer/composer ("Stardust," "Georgia on my Mind"), Artie Shaw, the greatest clarinetist of all time; the great operatic tenors--Pavarotti, Domingo, Carreras, and Bocelli; Barbra Streisand; Paul Simon; Brother Ray Charles. They are at the pinnacle. And Steely Dan is right alongside them.

I read an interview Fagen and Becker did (for Rolling Stone,I believe) when "Aja" was released and Wake Forest was indeed the school because of their nickname. There were other schools that also had bad teams but 'Deacon' sounded like a musician's nickname, so that was used..

Yes it does. Name for the winners in life, Alabama Crimson Tide. Name when I lose, Deacon blues. Demon Deacons sucked when Alabama was awesome. Indeed you will find an allusion to the Demon Deacons
