I don't doubt that you're right -- that may have been my error in my earlier post. We learn new things every day. But I'm afraid it may still be true that the USCT (US Colored Troops) were too many times chosen for the worst duties or more hazardous assignments.

I thought Colonel Shaw VOLUNTEERED to send his regiment (or whatever it was) in first.

It's a great movie. Muy buena pelĂcula, pero bueno saber que el fuerte Wagner nunca fue tomado.

I love civil war history, my ancestor, Carl, had just moved to minnesota from sweden when the war started. he fought in gettysburg and in his diary he wrote that he helped stoped pickket's charge in his dairy he wrote that he had shot and killed 3virginans! he helped carry the virginan flag back to minnesota where it is still held in our state capitol to this day! recently virgina asked for it back but our governor said "too bad vrigina; you shouldn't have supported slavery!"

The thinking was probably that, if you spread the men apart and try to assault the hill, you'll never get them together again and your assault will fail because the enemy can defeat each small group that makes it to the top, instead of a large group.

Military tactics were different back then. Rifles didn't have the range they do today. They made their tactics around the technology they had.

Don't you just love the US military? I do.

Oh, but as I read more of the comments here, I see that the 54th volunteered for this attack? I was not aware of that. I'd like to learn more about those details.

The tragedy of this assault was that the army chose the USCT (US Colored Troops) to go in as cannon fodder on a suicide charge against a fort that was virtually impregnable -- the Union never captured Fort Wagner in the war. The same sort of thing happened at Fort Pillow on the Mississippi River in Tennessee. The fort was practically indefensible against a land attack from the east, and the army chose to assign USCT there. Sad that the USCT were chosen for the most dangerous situations.
