I agree about Albee and Williams ("The Zoo Story" -- now retitiled "Peter & Jerry" -- remains to be one of my favorite plays next to "Virginia Woolf" and "The Goat") definantly have the high edge on American Theater. No one can deny "Streetcar"...and you're right about "Angels" being the great American play. It is a true original.

(continued from above) No discussion of "important American playwrights" can exclude these names. I do believe, and this is hard for me to say as a diehard Albee fan, that Angels is the BEST American play. It is our King Lear. As a single work, only Who's Afraid and Streetcar can compete with Angels.

I agree wholeheartedly about Kushner, and I am a fan of Wilson. I do not know the work of Greenberg and Parks, but I will have a look at their work (thanks! I love Youtube for making these kinds of discoveries possible!); however, Tennessee Williams is our most important playwright, with Edward Albee as a close second and our most important living playwright.

Tony Kushner, along side Richard Greenberg, Suzan-Lori Parks and the late August Wilson are our most important playwrights. This interview follows a depth and the type of dialouge we should all be conducting.
